Objectives/mission/scope
The research cluster Engineering and Technology for Sustainable Development aims to create technical and, above all, sustainable solutions in the fields of energy supply, mobility, circular economy and materials research.
This research focus on optimising all areas of application has to be seen as an integral ingredient of a broader goal: achieving global sustainable development, with its wide-ranging agenda of environmental stewardship, inter-generational equity, social justice and geographical equity.
An important application is to link the supply through renewable energies and sustainable materials with the field of urban development, including its infrastructure, as well as in the field of agriculture, and within the interfaces between urban and rural areas.
New models for evaluating the operational performance of complex systems (e.g., infrastructures, production processes, cities) and new, ecological materials can support the transition to sustainable and intelligent urban and mobility concepts.
As rural areas have so far provided for the cities, with growing demand and climatic changes, innovative, technical solutions need to be found to adapt agricultural production. Precision agriculture comprises a set of technologies that combines the use of satellite remote sensing, in situ sensors, information systems, renewable energy, enhanced machinery, and informed management to optimise production by accounting for variability and uncertainties (climate change, water and fertilisers availability, pests) within agricultural systems.
The aim of this research cluster is to minimise the negative impact of the increasing demand for energy, materials, living and housing space, food and the land for its production through sustainable and innovative engineering and technology.
