EU GREEN WP3 - 3rd edition of the Research WeekMonday 9th of June to Friday 13th of June 2025 at the University of Parma (Italy)

Dear colleagues,

We are glad to welcome you to the 3rd edition of the EU GREEN Research Week, an event organized by WP3 (Structuring research-based learning trough Excellence Clusters) which will be held at the teaching hub on Via Kennedy, right across from one of Parma's most symbolic urban parks: Parco Ducale, in the heart of the city. This event is a core time in our always-busy academic calendar, with invaluable face to face meetings replacing the many virtual connections that take place during the year.

Important

You will find here a 2-min survey. It will allow registration to informal times, and grant authorization to pictures. All participants are required to fill it.

Built around plenary sessions and various in-person meetings (between cluster members, the PhD Council, the European Task Force, and the Joint Research Commission), this Research Week will define the vision and roadmap for WP3 for the coming academic years — and offer a welcome opportunity to step back from daily routines and think differently.

If you have time before or after our meeting, we invite you to take some time to get acquainted with the city and its most iconic sites—these are not just squares, churches, monuments, and museums, but entire districts in the historic centre, made up of quaint streets, people, trades, stories, and small details you notice when walking slowly and observing. Parma is a European capital of gastronomy, where the local food culture intertwines ancient traditions with top-tier university research. Such food culture continues to produce something magical that must be experienced—sitting at the table is part of the Parma experience, as visiting the Palatina Library, the cathedral or the Farnese theatre. At the end of this program there are a few suggestions for your free time in Parma, for this or the next visit.

The Spirit of the Research Week

After the in-person meetings at the University of Angers, France (2023) and at the Atlantic Technological University, Sligo campus, Ireland (2024), this is the third edition of the EU GREEN Research Week, marking the halfway point of our project. We think of this time as an occasion to facilitate discussions and networking, to create new relationships. This year, two themes will guide our exchanges:

1.      Rooting Research in Society, a multi-level stakeholder approach

Three open roundtables will be organised on transversal topics to allow for joint discussions across scientific topics. These sessions will have the goal of rooting the EU GREEN research world into the local regions, where public and private stakeholders operate. The aim is to connect the regional needs and demands for knowledge in sustainability with our EU GREEN university researchers, to develop external networks and to focus on sustainability solutions.

The roundtable discussions will focus on research activities involving stakeholders at different spatial scales:

  • Research for sustainability at the university campus scale, involving students, associations, citizens, faculty, and administrative staff.
  • Research for sustainability at the city scale, featuring examples of research collaborations with local authorities.
  • Research for sustainability at the regional scale, discussing large-scale sustainable ecological transitions.

Each roundtable will consist of two phases: presentations of selected projects led by researchers from the University of Parama in partnership with stakeholders, followed by open discussion, with potential for integration into the alliance or synergy with activities in partner campuses, municipalities and regions.

2.      To infinity and beyond: the future of EU GREEN research collaboration after 2026

Each edition of the Research Week aims to grow and add complexity to our work. In this edition, alongside traditional in-person meetings among active researchers working in clusters, members of the PhD Council and of the European Task Force and pro-rectors driving EU GREEN research via the Joint Research Commission, we have a diverse group of PhD students attending a Summer School we have co-designed and competing in the 3-minute fame contest. All those participants, all of you, are full actors of the EU GREEN project.

The current EU GREEN project runs from 2023 to 2026. In early 2026, the alliance will apply for continued funding from the European Commission: therefore, this 2025 Research week is the perfect opportunity to start reflecting on the next step we collectively would like to achieve.

Since 2023, we’ve generated new ideas, submitted projects, produced new joint research, and are mentoring young researchers, helping them acquire skills to become scholars, professionals, and entrepreneurs—problem-solvers in their regions and ambassadors of sustainability, the hallmark of EU GREEN.

In each instance, we’ve made progress through trials and errors, some disagreements and setbacks, moments of frustration, and renewed enthusiasm. This in person meeting is the occasion to set the basis for the next phase of EU GREEN, the next goals we want to set for ourselves.

We face complex challenges in a politically uncertain landscape, but we enthusiastically believe in deeper integration as universities, alignment of procedures, sharing expertise, research infrastructures, know-how and the territorial bonds we’ve built. We must think and act less like individual universities working locally and more like a shared European university, with patient, democratic and inclusive processes

Participants in the 2025 Research Week

For PhD students: to do before and during the Summer School “Pitch & Connect: Research Networking in Action”.

Before the in-presence meeting, check the the list of participants to the EU GREEN Research week (below). The objective is to facilitate networking between you, PhD students, and researchers attending the research week.

How to proceed:

  • A list of participating researchers - including their names and research activities (keywords - will be provided.
  • Each PhD student is asked to select two researchers they are interested in speaking with, potentially with a view to finding a postdoctoral position.
  • Students will conduct an online bibliographical search to learn more about the research activities of these two researchers.
  • Additionally, they will prepare a concise and effective pitch to introduce themselves, their research interests, and their motivation for wanting to work in the researcher’s lab.
  • During informal times, PhD students will approach the selected researchers and deliver their pitches.
  • At the end of the conversation, researchers are invited to provide constructive feedback, helping the PhD student refine their presentation skills, attract more attention, and become more impactful.
  • A signature will be asked to prove that the pitch has been delivered.
